Artas Primitivo Salento IGT 2006

Castello Monaci

Terroir: The Castello Monaci Artas Primitivo is sourced from vineyards surrounding the ancient Castello Monaci estate. The dry, limestone-based soils combine with alberello-trained vines and the hot arid climate to produce remarkably low yields and extraordinarily rich wines.

Vinification: Harvest is done at night to avoid exposing the picked grapes to the intense heat of the southern sun. The grapes are macerated at cold temperature for 15+ days with frequent pumping over of the must to encourage rich extraction of flavor and color. Following fermentation the wine is aged for 6 months in French oak and other 6 months in casks followed by an additional 6 months in bottle prior to release. 9,500 bottles produced.

Additional Information

"The results achieved this year indicate that the Castello Monaci estate has reached its cruising speed. The new wines and labels presented bear witness to its qualitative growth and ability to interpret this territory belonging to the Gruppo Italiano Vini. Its wines make it a point of reference for Puglia winemaking. For the second year in a row, the Artas returns home with a Three Glass crown. In the '06 edition, this 100 per cent Primitivo shows a garnet ruby appearance and a complex nose of fig, pomegranate and plum jam. The palate is full, rich and fruity with a long, refreshing, dynamic finish." Tre Bicchieri, ('Three Glasses' Gambero Rosso's Highest Award) -Gambero Rosso, Jan. 1, 2009

Shows what the estate can do at a higher, more ambitious level, and the results are striking. This dark, hulking beauty reveals sepia-toned nuances of earthiness, scorched earth, tar, smoke, minerals and jammy black fruits in a dense, full-bodied style. This superb Primitivo is a great introduction to the heights this cousin of Zinfandel can achieve in Pulgia. Simply put, the 2006 Artas is a great effort from Castello Monaci.
