Artas Primitivo Salento IGT 2011

Castello Monaci

Terroir: The Castello Monaci Artas Primitivo is sourced from vineyards surrounding the ancient Castello Monaci estate. The dry, limestone-based soils combine with alberello-trained vines and the hot arid climate to produce remarkably low yields and extraordinarily rich wines.

Vinification: Harvest is done at night to avoid exposing the picked grapes to the intense heat of the southern sun. The grapes are macerated at cold temperature for 15+ days with frequent pumping over of the must to encourage rich extraction of flavor and color. Following fermentation the wine is aged for 6 months in French oak and other 6 months in casks followed by an additional 6 months in bottle prior to release. 9,500 bottles produced.

"A medium-bodied, balanced red, with sculpted tannins and a rich mix of sun-dried black cherry and date fruit, accented by hints of smoke, mocha and black licorice string. Offers a fresh, mineral-tinged finish. Drink now through 2023."

"The 2011 Primitivo Artas is a massive wine that shows the ripeness and jammy sweet flavors that are characteristic of this hot vintage. The wine is so big and opulent, it is not for everybody. It opens to an inky, impenetrable appearance with aromas of cured meat, dark earth, grilled herb and blackberry marmalade. A distinct note of sweetness adds to the grit and heft of the wine's already large frame."
