Vintage Port is only produced when growing conditions have been excellent and allow for the production of the finest wines from a single year (as opposed to a blend of different years). In these cases, a vintage is declared. Vintage Ports are bottled young after fortification and take a long time to mature. Usually they throw a heavy “crust” or sediment as they mature and must be decanted before being served. Considered the “king” of all Port wines and regarded as a key collectible like fine Bordeaux, Vintage Port is one of the world’s great wines. Great Vintage Ports are served by themselves or accompanied by walnuts, Stilton Cheese or fine cigars.
