Vintage Port is only produced when growing conditions have been excellent and allow for the production of the finest wines from a single year (as opposed to a blend of different years). In these cases, a vintage is declared. Vintage Ports are bottled young after fortification and take a long time to mature. Usually they throw a heavy “crust” or sediment as they mature and must be decanted before being served. Considered the “king” of all Port wines and regarded as a key collectible like fine Bordeaux, Vintage Port is one of the world’s great wines. Great Vintage Ports are served by themselves or accompanied by walnuts, Stilton Cheese or fine cigars.

The 2014 Vintage Port is a field blend that comes in at 102 grams per liter of residual sugar. This was tasted from a 375 milliliter bottle, to which the price applies. For a 2014a perilous year in Dourothis is pretty fine. Showing a reasonably serious backbone, it adds a little eucalyptus on the nose, plus focus and precision on the finish. That finish is dry and fairly stern, a typical 2014 demeanormeaning that there isn't much fruit showing. The finish has very respectable length, though. This is one of the 2014s that you can age with some confidence of further development, although how much and how well is still an open question. It is certainly not ready to drink but it is coming along fast enough so that you can approach it young. You could even open it now if you give it some air.

A solid, juicy-edged version, with a lively core of plum, anise and aai berry flavors that keeps the energy up through the bramble- and mint-edged finish. Should mature on the earlier side. Only available in 375ml and 1.5L formats. Best from 2020 through 2030.
