Terroir: Clos de Beze was originally planted by the monks of the Abbey of Beze in 630. Bordering Le Chambertin to the south, Mazis to the north and La Chapelle Chambertin directly below, Clos de Beze encompasses 36+ acres facing east along the middle to upper slopes of the hillside. Domaine Rousseau's fruit is sourced from both from Petit Clos de Beze and the upper parcels of Clos de Beze in shallow, dry soils marked with limestone.
Vinification: Grapes are meticulously sorted as they arrive in the winery. Following a cool maceration the must travels by gravity into barrel where it will stay for the entire vinification process lasting typically 18-24 months. Each Armand Rousseau wine is blended unfiltered.

Towering cherry, raspberry, wild herb and mineral flavors are the hallmarks of this red, which possesses terrific energy and concentration on a slim frame. The fruit-, mineral- and spice-filled finish goes on and on, with an aerial component that drives the complex aftertaste. Best from 2023 through 2045.
In 2014 it's as though the Clos de Bze and Chambertin have switched places in the sense that this is less expressive, super powerful and appears to be the more structured of the two as well. A discreetly spicy nose consists of sandalwood, essence of black cherry liqueur, violets and a hint of the sauvage. There is seriously good size, weight and power to the imposingly scaled flavors that display almost painful intensity on the driving, explosively long and very firmly structured finish. Unlike most vintages this is actually the harder of the two wines to read today though everything appears to be in place to allow this to age brilliantly.
(100% new oak): Saturated red with ruby tones. Knockout nose combines raspberry, smoked meat, rose petal and mellow oak tones. Pure silk in the mouth but with intense mineral and floral high notes giving powerful dynamism to the flavors of raspberry, spices and crushed stone. Really exhilarating sugar/acid balance here. Tannins reach the front teeth on the tactile, palate-drenching finish. One of the longest wines of the vintage. Incidentally, Rousseau told me that this wine was much more marked by its oak component just a month prior to my visit, and that his Clos de Bze routinely needs its second winter in barrel to absorb its oak.
The 2014 Chambertin Clos de Beze Grand Cru has a seductive bouquet with pure raspberry and wild strawberry fruit, woodland scents and a touch of something sweet deep down underneath...white chocolate maybe? The palate is medium-bodied with very refined, supple tannin. The acidity cuts through the red berry fruit and then a healthy dose of black pepper comes towards the finish that has a slight biter cherry edge. This is superb and yet the 2014 Chambertin just moves it to one side this year and says...I'm the daddy.
