Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon 2010

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils

Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils owns a total of just under 10 acres of the famous Vaillon vineyard. With a relatively steep grade the plot has terrific drainage of it's Kimmeridgien clay soil and a south/southeast exposure that provides optimum sunlight throughout the growing season.

Vinification: The winemaking techniques strive to honor the high quality of the terroir, vines and grapes, bringing out the very best in every harvest. A small percentage of the final blend does see a short time in oak barrels.

"This is sleek, displaying a lemon-lime flavor profile tinged by mineral. Linear and focused, with the citrus flavors persisting on the long finish. Very elegant and harmonious."

"Here the nose is both more elegant and more complex with really lovely purity to the aromas of sea breeze, pear, floral notes and spice hints. There is an attractive raciness to the detailed and beautifully intense mineral-driven medium bodied flavors that possess excellent precision on the balanced, long and attractively complex finish. This is really lovely juice fashioned with admirable finesse that is sufficiently forward that it could be enjoyed now or cellared for a few years first."

"The 2010 Chablis Vaillon is gorgeous. Floral aromatics meld into layers of expressive yellow stone fruits and crushed rocks. There is a pure vibrancy to the Vaillon that serves to balance the depth of the fruit. The vivid yet understated style is highly appealing. The Vaillon was aged 60% in steel and 40% in oak. Anticipated maturity: 2012."

"Pale bright yellow. Cool, high-pitched aromas of lime blossom, mint, crushed stone and white pepper, complicated by musky quinine. Concentrated, fresh and fine-grained, at once penetrating and youthfully tight, with intense citrus peel, mineral and white pepper flavors carrying through to the brisk, very long finish. This really leaves the taste buds vibrating. According to Moreau, this grand cru went through its alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in barrel, none new, then went into tank. A terrific performance for these young vines."

"Creamy oak and yellow fruit bouquet. Very good attack of bracing bitter lemon and mineral fruit. Textured and long; oaky style with very good depth. Not that complex now but in time will open up."

" Moreaus single vineyard 2010 Chablis are a study in that elusive concept of terroir. Each is distinctive and unique, reflecting the exposure and soil of the site. Their only Premier Cru, their 2010 Vaillons is a step-up in concentration and body from Moreaus village Chablis (also reviewed this week). Riveting acidity magnifies its alluring richness. Whats particularly gratifying is that the unique flinty minerality of Chablis is maintained despite the extra dose of ripeness."

"Here the nose is strongly reduced and unreadable. By contrast, there is really lovely purity to the racy, detailed and beautifully intense mineral-driven medium-bodied flavors that possess excellent precision on the balanced, long and attractively complex finish. Lovely juice."

"The 2010 Chablis Vaillons offers up gorgeously intense hints of lemon, butter, smoke and spices. It shows marvelous energy and vibrancy as layers of beautifully delineated fruit continue to emerge from the glass. The wiry, taut finish will require patience, but also bodes quite well for the future. The Vaillons was partly aged in oak (38%), which still needs time to integrate. Moreau owns five parcels in Vaillons, which are vinified separately for this bottling. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2025."

"Pale yellow. Subtle, high-pitched aromas of lemon, ginger and licorice. Sweet on entry, then firm and spicy in the middle, with lemon, mineral and menthol flavors complemented by saline seashell quality. Finishes youthfully tight and persistent."
