Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot 2014

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils

Terroir: The Grand Cru Blanchot is located on the left bank of the Serein river adjacent to Grand Cru Les Clos and has an optimal south/ southeast exposure. Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils plot is located mid-hillside with will drained soils of Kimmeridgien limestone that is rich in small oyster fossils typical of the region. This soil helps to create wines of distinctive mineral complexity.

Vinification: The winemaking techniques strive to honor the high quality of the terroir, vines and grapes, bringing out the very best in every harvest. A small portion of Grand Cru Blanchot is aged in oak cask while the majority of the blend is aged in stainless steel.

Very pure aromas of lemon, stone fruits, spices and crushed herbs. Pure and penetrating in spite of an oaky element, with a strong fresh peach flavor showing terrific high-altitude citricity but less body in the early going than the Vaillons Guy Moreau. Very backward and very long, this wine will benefit from another five years of additional aging.

"(just 1-1/2 barrels made): Bright, green-tinged yellow. Knockout nose combines fresh nectarine, lemon, lime, ginger, cumin, tarragon and crushed herbs. Densely packed, spicy and quite dry, even youthfully austere, showing superb energy to its citrus, menthol and mint flavors. Finishes dry, vibrant and very long, with beautifully integrated oak."

"Discreet but not invisible wood sets off an elegant, cool and airy nose that is comprised of essence of pear, apple, sea breeze and floral aromas. There is fine intensity to the bigger and more powerful flavors that possess a bit more mid-palate concentration as well, all wrapped in a mineral-inflected, clean and dry finish where the wood telegraphed by the nose resurfaces."

"The 2014 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchots was tight-lipped when I tasted it at the Domaine despite rigorous coaxing. The palate is crisp and fresh with penetrating acidity, animated and tensile with compelling mineralit on the finish that is on a different level to the previous vintage. There is just a barrel and a feuillette this year, the former not finishing its malo until June, the feuillette back in January! But this assemblage shows a stupendous Blanchots in the making. "
