Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 2014

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils

Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils owns a total of 7.5 acres of this most famous of the Grand Crus of Chablis, more than any other producer in the region. Their primary parcel sits on the high portion of the hillside with a direct southeast exposure. With the steep grade, drainage of the kimmeridgien soils is quick leading to low yields of the densely planted vines.

Vinification: A sizable 40% of the final blend is aged in oak cask, although only a small percentage is new barrels. The oak contact is unobtrusive and is a testament to the sheer power of this Grand Cru.

This white combines freshness and depth with a supple, almost creamy texture. Lemon-lime, Granny Smith apple, tart green plum and oyster shell flavors converge as this dovetails on the long, chalky finish. Accents of fresh herbs and flowers linger. Best from 2018 through 2028.

Smoky silex and wet stone aromas are complicated by piquant citrus high notes and a subtle yeasty element. Large-scaled, intense and structured, showing a distinctly crisp character for its richness thanks to penetrating lemony acidity. The Moreaus' organic viticulture makes for relatively low pHs (3.2 in this 2014) but the acidity here is only 4.0 grams. Still, this vibrant, complete Chablis is built for the long haul.

"Bright yellow. Compelling perfume of lime zest, mirabelle, salty sea breeze, spices and smoky silex. Juicy, spicy and intense, conveying an impression of density without weight, with an element of minty cut contributing energy. The rising, palate-staining finish saturates the mouth with saline minerality."

"This could not be mistaken for anything other than Chablis as there is plenty of typicity to the white fruit and floral scented nose. There is also excellent size, weight, power and richness to the middle weight plus flavors that exude ample minerality on the overtly saline finish. The question here is whether first-rate complexity will develop because at the moment this seems to lack the overall depth it usually has. My projected range offers the benefit of the doubt given the track record of this wine."
