Chablis Grand Cru Valmur 2006

Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils

Terroir: The tiny plot of Grand Cru Valmur sits snuggly between Vaudésir to the north and Les Clos to the south. Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils owns a total of 3 acres of this famed terroir. The plot is densely planted (7000 vines per hectare) with vines averaging 50 years old.

Vinification: Up to 50% of the blend spends some time in oak, of which 90% are 2-3 year old barrels. Just 10% is new.

Additional Information

"Pale yellow. Explosive nose offers sexy mirabelle, brown spices, baked bread and smoky silex notes; distinctly earthier and more deeply pitched than the Clos. Ripe, dense and powerful, with a silky texture to the rocky flavors of grapefruit and wet stone; clearly a wine from a very warm site. Boasts lovely sucrosite and generosity of texture and really spreads out on the palate. A showy wine with a rising whiplash of a finish." 91-94 points -Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Jul.-Aug. 2007

Scents of chalk and racy acidity keep this wine model-thin and arrestingly beautiful. The fragrance is powerful as is the finish, while the middle of the wine is corseted and subdued. The scents of green pear skin and the lingering taste of fleshy cherimoya predict what the center of the wine may become in six to eight years.

An initially wood-laden wine that only slowly reveals the rich fruit character. There is wood certainly, but the spice integrates well with the green fruits and the intense minerality. The great steely backbone on this wine indicates it will age.

From one of only seven Grand Cru Chablis vineyards comes this splendid Chardonnay. Fermented half in steel and half in barrel, its a luxurious mix of pear and apple fruit and lemony acidity.

Honeyed nose. Elegantly balanced wine. Fresh, ripe, complex and with good scented length. A stylish Grand Cru in a slightly lighter vein.

The Moreau 2006 Chablis Valmur is scented with lime, cardamom, crushed stone, white pepper, musky-sweet, narcissus-like florality, and hints of tropical fruit. The themes of pungency, perfume and ripeness continue on the palate, where grapefruit and lime offer refreshment, and toasted nuts and brown spices hint at the influence of barrel as well no doubt as the character of very ripe fruit.

Pale yellow. Sexy, expressive aromas and flavors of mirabelle, pineapple, ginger and flint, all lifted by a violet topnote. Dense, rich and quite suave, with a saline element accentuating the impression of soil. A big boy but quite fine; there's nothing heavy about this grand cru. The slowly mounting finish boasts terrific texture and life.

Vanilla accents complement the honey and lemon flavors, and a hint of butterscotch creeps in by the finish. Theres nice cut and definition, with a touch of anise in the aftertaste. Best from 2009 through 2018.

(from a full 1 ha parcel). A discreet touch of wood highlights a layered and high-toned white flower, green fruit and oyster shell and mineral suffused nose that complements perfectly the rich, full, dense and penetrating medium full flavors that ooze dry extract, which gives a sappy and textured quality to the vibrant and impressively long finish. A lovely and admirably well balanced effort.
