Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er Cru Les Porets St-Georges 2014

Domaine Faiveley

Domaine Faiveley combines the principles of modern winemaking methods with the time honored traditions that have been practiced for centuries within their 19th century cellars. Each terroir and each vintage, benefits from special attention which makes the cuvées unique. Each bottle therefore becomes the faithful reflection of its terroir.

Terroir: 1er Cru Les Porêts St-Georges is a small vineyard of just 18 acres just south of the main village of Nuits-St-Georges. Domaine Faiveley farms a parcel of 4+ acres that lies along the vineyards southern border with Les Cailles. Sun exposure is to the east and soils are dark brown with limestone and granite gravel.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested and sorted upon arrival at the domaine. Following a short maceration the must undergoes primary fermentation in a combination of stainless steel and wooden vats. The young wines are aged in 70% lightly toasted new oak barrels for 14 to 16 months.

Black currant, cherry and raspberry flavors are framed by tobacco and spicy oak in this elegant red. Firms up, yet has the potential to come together quickly. Best from 2019 through 2030

"No such reduction plagues the nose in this case as there is both good freshness and expressiveness to the array of red berry fruit, earth, sauvage and smoky hints. The appealingly textured, intense, detailed and vibrant middle weight flavors possess a completely different mouth feel while delivering a lingering, complex and more obviously austere finale. This too is very Nuits in style and will need a few more years of bottle age as the supporting tannins are markedly firm."

Bright ruby-red. Captivating violet and lavender lift to the aromas of black cherry, menthol and bitter chocolate. Juicy, energetic and sharply delineated, showing terrific thrust to its dark fruit, licorice and spice flavors. I would have picked this blind as a 2013. This will require at least several years of bottle aging.
