Terroir: Domaine Jacques Prieur owns two acres of vines idealy located on the mid level slopes of the Grand Cru of Chambertin. Soil here is rich in organic material, mineral and clay and vines are old and very densely planted to encourage competition amongst the vines, limiting yields and producing fruit of great concentration.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must macerates in temperature controlled oak vats for 21 days. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.
"(just racked) Medium red. Complex aromas of raspberry, earth and smoked meat. Rich and creamy, with sexy earth tones and a wonderfully enveloping texture. This is really fat with fruit even if it's a bit reserved today. Finishes with suave, ripe tannins and a sappy saline quality that gives energy to the wine. Made entirely from the estate's old vines in this grand cru, as the young vines go into a Gevrey premier cru bottling." 90-93 pts. -Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, Mar.-Apr. 2009

Leather, red licorice, cocoa powder, in the nose ofPrieurs 2007 Chambertin presage a stewed-fruitrecapitulation of those themes on a broad butstrongly tannic palate. The finish offers a rathermuddled sort of richness, with prominent carameland resin of new wood and slightly gum-numbingastringency. But as with other 2007s in this position,I am not convinced that for all of its tannin this reallyhas structure for significant cellaring or the sort ofpersonality that will become more interesting in theprocess. Certainly though, it should keepwell-enough for at least 3-5 years and would beworth re-visiting and re-evaluating.

This is also extremely fresh with notably cool and reserved densely fruited aromas that marry into dense, serious and intensely mineral-suffused flavors that possess a really lovely mouth feel before culminating in a powerful and tautly muscled finish that completely stains the palate. A knock out and this has an interesting note of salinity on the incredibly long finish.
