Clos de Vougeot Grand Cru 2015

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: The large 123 acre vineyard of Clos de Vougeot is one of the most famous terroirs in all of Burgundy. Because of it's vast size, this walled vineyard holds many micro-climates with many grade and soil variations.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 24 hours prior to fermentation. The wine ages for 17 months of in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

This wine has extremely limited availability in both 750ml and 1.5l. Please consult your local FWS rep for availability.

(from a 1.19 ha parcel of vines at the bottom of the slope; 50% whole clusters). A ripe yet restrained nose somewhat grudgingly offers up its aromas of dark currant, plum, spice and freshly turned earth. There is outstanding size, weight and concentration to the very suave, round and quite generously proportioned big-bodied flavors that culminate in a muscular and well-balanced finish where a touch of the classic youthful austerity appears. This too will require at least some patience though I would expect that this could be approached after only 7 to 8 years of cellaring.

(40% vendange entier): Deep ruby-red. Very pure but reticent aromas of black cherry, herbs and licorice. Offers attractive sweetness to its medicinal black cherry and licorice flavors but comes across as extremely primary today, like a brand-new barrel sample. This youthfully tight, firmly structured wine finishes with powerful tannins that call for more levage (Gublin told me she'd probably wait until June to bottle it). But there's terrific intensity of fruit to support the powerful spine.

The 2015 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru includes 30% whole bunch fruit. It has a succinct bouquet, quite understated compared to others that I have tasted, but well defined with black cherries, bergamot and pomegranate aromas. The palate is medium-bodied with fine, tensile tannin. There is a keen thread of acidity here, gently grip with a slightly chalky textured, but energetic finish with pleasing frisson. Enjoy this over the next 15-20 years.
