Volnay 1er Cru Champans 2005

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: 1er Cru Champans is one of the larger 1er Cru vineyards in the village of Volnay. The vineyard sits just west of the village on a rather steep portion of the hill and sees optimal exposure to the sun thoughout the growing season. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns a bit less than 1 acres on the upper slope of the vineyard.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 19 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for a total of 17 months in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Information

“Saturated, bright ruby. Musky aromas of black raspberry, dark chocolate and earth. Sweet, fat and full, with enticing flavors of black raspberry and violet. This is solid but with plenty of early personality. Finishes with lovely length and vinosity, the tannins substantial but arriving late.” -Stephen Tanzer, International Wine Cellar, Mar.-Apr. 2007

Young and shy, but the structure is obvious by the nose that includes brambly red berries and pencil shavings with floral highlights. Just as restrained in the mouth; flavors of cherry skin and cedar. A few years should allow it to show its stellar qualities fully.
