Terroir: 1er Cru Champans is one of the larger 1er Cru vineyards in the village of Volnay. The vineyard sits just west of the village on a rather steep portion of the hill and sees optimal exposure to the sun thoughout the growing season. Domaine Jacques Prieur owns a bit less than 1 acres on the upper slope of the vineyard.
Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 19 days prior to fermentation. The wine ages for a total of 17 months in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.
" Good bright, dark red. Discreet nose hints at red fruits and menthol. Suppler and sweeter in the mouth than the nose suggests, but with very good precision and a firm mineral underpinning to the raspberry and gunflint flavors. Less flamboyantly fruity now than the Clos des Santenots, but displays very good tension, not to mention a firm tannic spine."
