Coto de Imaz Rioja Reserva Rioja DOCa 1996

El Coto de Rioja

Terroir: The Coto de Imaz wines are made with grapes grown on El Coto’s Cenicero estate vineyards. These vineyards are home to low yielding, old Tempranillo vines in Rioja Alta. The clay and alluvial soils of this region are known for crafting wines with great longevity and good acidity.

Vinification: El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from estate vineyards in the Rioja Alta. The wine is slowly vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 20-30 days. The wine receives extended skin contact to encourage extraction, balanced tannins and structure, followed by 18 months of aging in new and used American oak and 24 months in bottle prior to release.

Additional Information

Medium red. Cedar, vanilla, dried strawberry and rhubarb on the nose, with complicating notes of underbrush, cigar box and flowers. Silky-smooth and sweet, with medium weight and very good depth to the red fruit flavors. The tannins are harmonious and suave, framing the fruit but not overwhelming it. Finishes supple and lush, with a note of red berry preserves.

Broad-shouldered and muscled-up, this hearty wine seems more youthful than it is. The nose is spicy and full of lively berry aromas, while the palate is laced with red cherry, raspberry and vanilla. Its a classic gran reserve with dried qualities and spice. Its right on the money.

This wines mature, complex scents meld cherry with the spice of oak. Its a heady and potent combination, a balance of weight and gentleness that comes together with several hours of air. A fine red for braised rabbit.
