Coto de Imaz Rioja Reserva Rioja DOCa 2004

El Coto de Rioja

Terroir: The Coto de Imaz wines are made with grapes grown on El Coto’s Cenicero estate vineyards. These vineyards are home to low yielding, old Tempranillo vines in Rioja Alta. The clay and alluvial soils of this region are known for crafting wines with great longevity and good acidity.

Vinification: El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from estate vineyards in the Rioja Alta. The wine is slowly vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 20-30 days. The wine receives extended skin contact to encourage extraction, balanced tannins and structure, followed by 18 months of aging in new and used American oak and 24 months in bottle prior to release.

Additional Information

On the palate, there's a range of delicate red fruit (strawberry and red cherry) with smoky vanilla notes from the new American oak. Soft tannins are balanced against fresh acidity in the mouth.

The 2004 El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Reserva is a classic medium-bodied Rioja red, made from the much-loved Tempranillo grape.Talk about fresh, ripe red berry fruit on the palate - largely in the form of cherry, strawberry and a touch of currant, followed by delicious spice and lingering vanilla tones. The overall balance and tannin structureworks very well in this wine and makes for a remarkable pairing partner with tapas, sausage or peppery dishes.

Cotos Tempranillo is an excellent example of the 2004 vintage, a stellar year for the Rioja region. Ripe red fruit, sweet coconut and floral notes mark the nose, while the palate reveals deeper flavors of cedar and pipe tobacco supported by firm yet approachable tannins and lively acidity.

At first it explodes with glowing flavors of ripe plums, blackberries and black cherries wrapped in soft easy tannins. But after a time and a modicum of contemplation perhaps other, more interesting flavors emerge. Theres a pronounced, rustic earthiness thats unique to Riojas and separates it from other well-made reasonably-priced European reds.

(Archive) "This light and frisky tempranillo is styled like a fine pinot noir, with fragrant rose petal scents and tension to its lasting red fruit. The tannins are present but not heavy, so the wine leaves a clean impression. For roast fish in a red wine sauce."

An opening of spice, toasted fruit, leather and lemon peel is attractive in the traditional sense. Medium bodied, with tangy red-cherry flavors up front and some citrus in the rear. Finishes light and fresh, with touches of vanilla and fresh-chopped dill. Very drinkable if you like a more classic-style Rioja.

Sweet vanilla frames raspberry and strawberry fruit, with accents of wild herbs and lilac in this supple, expressive red.

Bright red color. Ripe cherry and blackcurrant aromas are complemented by vanillin oak spices and cured tobacco. Fleshy and sweet, offering concentrated cherry preserve and bitter chocolate flavors and picking up dusty tannins on the back end. Turns juicier and spicier on the finish, which strongly echoes the cherry and bitter chocolate notes. I'd give this a few more years of bottle age to mellow out.
