El Coto Real Reserva is a special winemakers selection only produced in the very finest vintages.
Terroir: Mainly Tempranillo, small percentages of Mazuelo and Garnacha Tinta. Grapes from our vines located in Rioja Alta. Very old vineyards with a great potential for quality. The vineyard Los Cuartos Viejos in Cenicero is a good example.
Vinification: Tempranillo, Garnacha and Graciano grapes are handpicked, and meticulously sorted prior to vinification at the winery. The juice sees extended skin contact and a cool vinification in order to extract, flavor, balance and structure prior to aging. The wine is aged in the cellars of El Coto for a period of 22 months in a combination of French and American oak followed by an additional 24 months in bottle prior to release.
"2005 was for many a perfect vintage in Rioja. Amazing color and phenolic ripening, thanks to the good weather and cool September nights. As usual, the grapes come from old vines planted in high slopes in Rioja Alavesa mostly. Malolactic fermentation in French oak, where it was later aged for 22 months. Unfiltered, it has been aged in bottle for 25 months prior to release. Deep and intense cherry colour. A complex nose of dark fruit wrapped in liquorice, sweet spices, creamy oak and chocolate. Velvety, with ripe tannins in the mouth, fruit driven with a long lasting aftertaste." -Victor Charcan

"Bright ruby-red. Aromas of redcurrant, dried cherry, cured tobacco and vanilla, with a peppery nuance adding lift. Smoky and chewy on the palate, offering bitter cherry and rose pastille flavors and a touch of succulent herbs. Dusty tannins build slowly on the sweet, penetrating finish, which clings with very good tenacity and repeating smokiness. This wine appears to be solidly in its prime drinking window but I'd feel no pressure to drink up."

"This smells a touch rubbery on the nose, but mostly it is an excellent high-end Rioja with leather, tobacco and red fruit aromas. The wine shows structure and solidity on the tongue, with dry, spicy red-berry flavors matched by a note of tobacco. Tight, dry and healthy-feeling on the finish"

"An earthy Rioja with lasting sour cherry flavors, this is still tightly wound. Tannins dominate the finish, perceptible as juicy grape skin tannins as well as more bitter oak notes that will meld with a steak."
"The 2005 Coto Real is the Bodegas bow to a more modern style. Made up of 80% Tempranillo, 10% Graciano, and 10% Garnacha, it spent 16 months in French and American oak. Aromas of pain grille, pencil lead, violets, and blackberry lead to a structured, relatively fruit-forward offering that will benefit from several more years of cellaring."
"Bright ruby-red. Sexy, perfumed aromas of oak-spiced cherry and dark berries, with floral and incense notes adding complexity. Plush and expansive, with good depth to its red and dark berry preserve flavors. Shows a velvety texture and finishes with lingering sweetness and oakiness. I'd give this a couple of years for the fruit and wood to harmonize a bit more."
