Crianza Rioja DOCa 2005

El Coto de Rioja

El Coto de Rioja Crianza is one of the most popular wines in all of Spain and one of the top selling Rioja's in the world. Year in/ year out this wine exhibits character, complexity and value unmatched in the category.

Terroir: The Crianza is sourced from low yielding Tempranillo grown on estate and other vineyards primarily in Rioja Alta, as well as additional sources in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja.

Vinification: The wine is macerated and fermented in stainless steel vats for 20-25 days with extended time on the skins to extract flavor and complexity, followed by 12 months aging in a combination of new and used American oak and 6 months in bottle prior to release.

Additional Information

“Medium red. Shy nose slowly opens to display redcurrant and dried cherry, along with subtle vanilla bean and tobacco qualities. Light, gently sweet red fruit flavors are silky and smooth, with no obvious tannins or rough edges. Understated and nicely balanced, with good finishing lift and clarity. Fans of old-school Rioja should give this a spin.” 88 pts. -Stephen Tanzer's International Wine Cellar, July 2008

On the nose its smoky and leathery, with an aroma that reminded of oolong tea. On the palate full of sour cherry, earth an acid (in a good way).

Only slightly reedy and sharp on the nose. After that, the wine shows nice fruit and balance throughout. There are snappy cherry and raspberry flavors, and the finish offers proper finality in the form of light oak and cleansing acidity. Drink now for an easy taste of Rioja.

This plump red has good stuffing, with just enough tannins for backbone. Offers plum, anise and mocha flavors, with a fresh, clean finish. Not showy, but balanced.
