Crianza Rioja DOCa 2013

El Coto de Rioja

El Coto de Rioja Crianza is one of the most popular wines in all of Spain and one of the top selling Rioja's in the world. Year in/ year out this wine exhibits character, complexity and value unmatched in the category.

Terroir: The Crianza is sourced from low yielding Tempranillo grown on estate and other vineyards primarily in Rioja Alta, as well as additional sources in Rioja Alavesa and Rioja Baja.

Vinification: The wine is macerated and fermented in stainless steel vats for 20-25 days with extended time on the skins to extract flavor and complexity, followed by 12 months aging in a combination of new and used American oak and 6 months in bottle prior to release.

Additional Information

This 100% Tempranillo shows layers of fresh raspberries, cherry, cedar and spice typical of a classically styled Rioja. This is all wrapped up in a vanilla and leather laiden package that is medium in body and sports a long, soft finish. Always a good value!

Rich and flavorful as the Iberico ham we drank it with. Packed with red summer berries, it was a bit tart and angular at first, but will improve for 3-5 years, thought I. But we didnt have to wait that long as time passed and the meal progressed, it opened delightfully, the angular acidity mellowing into gentle, sunny friendship. So remember to open an hour before drinking.

Sour cherry and raspberries countered with cinnamon-dominated baking spice in a medium, soft-bodied 100% Tempranillo. Just a touch of savory dill lingers on the palate. El Coto consists of a group of winemakers who own the largest vineyard holdings in Rioja. This enables them to pass the savings along to us and the result is indeed a well-balanced crianza offering excellent value. The label, which appears as a detailed black and gray engraving, features a protective looking buck. Poor guy; 730 hectares of vineyards is a lot to look after.
