Gewurztraminer Classic 2014

Famille Hugel

Terroir: The grapes used to produce Hugels "Classic" wines come exclusively from estate owned vineyards or from growers under long term contract surrounding the village of Riquewihr.

Vinification: Hugel Gewurztraminer is a flagship wine for the Hugel family. Fermentation takes place in temperature controlled vats followed by natural clarification in nuetral vessels over the winter. The wine is lightly fined and gently filtered prior to bottling in the spring.

From The Wine Advocate "New is the Classic (former Hugel) range that represents "the essence of the pure, dry Famille Hugel style" and now includes Muscat and Pinot Gris, along with all the other noble grapes. The grapes of the Classic range are predominantly purchased but obligatory hand-picked from vineyards with clay-limestone soils in Riquewihr and neighbouring villages, and give classic gastronomic wines with a dry expression."

Additional Information

The spice of Alsace and one of Famille Hugel's signature wines. It is both aromatic and extroverted through its floral and spicy notes. Gewurztraminer is an invitation to accompany a variety of spicy Asian dishes as well as smoked salmon and strong cheeses.

Hints of beeswax and orange blossom herald this dry and balanced Gewrztraminer. A smoky underpinning accents the pink grapefruit granita and white pepper notes. Drink now through 2020.

Bright yellow. Classic aromas of grapefruit, smoked beef and sweet spices. Vivid, precise and fruity, preserving noteworthy freshness in light of what can best be described as enamel-shattering acidity. Very well balanced on the dry, long finish. A major success for Gewrz in 2014.

Hints of rosewater and Turkish Delight waft from the glass. More toned down, the palate shines with citric freshness. There is quite a bit of warmth that seems to intensify the floral peach notes even more. It's very aromatic and varietally true, with a tropical finish of passion fruit.
