Ca’Brione Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio I.G.T. 2007

Nino Negri

A unique Valtellina white, the Nino Negri Ca Brione is a blend of late harvest Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Incrocio Manzoni (Pinot Blanc/Riesling) with a small percentage of Nebbiolo vinified as white (10%).

Terroir: Ca Brione is selected from vineyards that sit at an elevation of 1200 feet within the commune of Tresivio. Due to the extremely steep and sandy/ gravelly soils yields are naturally very low.

Vinification: The earlier ripening Sauvignon Blanc and Chardonnay grapes are harvested in late September and placed into wooden crates where they will dry until the Incrocio Manzoni and Chiavennasca are harvested in early October. Vinification is carried out separately for each varietal with a gentle pressing and fermentation and aging in a combination of 50% new and 50% older oak barriques. After eight months in barrel the wine is blended and bottled. 18,000 bottles produced.

Additional Information

The wine has a deep, golden color and fresh aromas of exotic fruit, spices and a note of musk. The wine is full, balanced and elegant on the palate, with finishing notes of fruit and vanilla.

    A lightly honeyed, spicy, richly citrusy blend of Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Incrocia Manzoni (a hybrid of Pinot Blanc and Riesling), and even weirder, a small proportion of Nebbiolo fermented without its skins so the juice remains white. White Nebbiolo, you bet. Regardless, it was a lovely wine, and if you happen to be serving crab cakes with a tarragon aioli, go for it.

    The 2007 Terrazze Retiche di Sondrio CaBrione is an interesting white made from Sauvignon, Chardonnay, Incrocio Manzoni plus Chiavennasca, the local variety of Nebbiolo, which here is fermented without skin contact. The fruit is air-dried for roughly fifteen days before being fermented in oak. This is a unique white wine that shows lovely balance in its beguiling aromatics and sweet, perfumed fruit. The wine possesses excellent depth and richness in a medium-bodied style, with a note of minerality that brings the wine into focus on the finish.
