Terroir: The Nino Negri Vigneto Fracia is produced from the estate vineyard of the same name. This 16 acre steep, terraced vineyard sits high on the south facing hillside in the commune of Chiuro within the Valgella subzone. Special clones and vinestocks have been selected and densely planted at over 12,000 plants per acre. Soils are poor consisting primarily of sand and granite gravel.
Vinification: The Vigneto Fracia ripens later than the rest of the region with harvest typically conducted in mid to late October. Selection is strict in the vineyard and grapes are sorted again after arrival at the winery. The must is macerated for 8 days and then aged for 16-20 months in small French oak casks.
With a vivid garnet color and brick-red tints, the wine has expressive aromas of dried flowers (violets, wild roses) and spices, with a note of blackberry preserve. On the palate, the wine has a dry, warm, savoury flavor with notes of ripe plums and bitter almonds on the long finish.
Shows notes of spice and dried flowers, and a warm, flavorsome palate with balanced oaky tones and hints of red berry fruit.

The 2005 Valtellina Superiore Vigneto Fracia is a very elegant wine. It reveals typical Chiavennnasca (Nebbiolo) aromas and flavors, with an additional dimension of weight and richness from the French oak barrels in which it was aged. The wine possesses outstanding harmony in a medium-bodied style, although it needs another year or so in bottle for the tannins to soften a bit. This is a terrific effort from Nino Negri.
