Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils Chablis 1er Cru Vaillon 2016

Terroir: Domaine Christian Moreau Pere et Fils owns a total of just under 10 acres of the famous Vaillon vineyard. With a relatively steep grade the plot has terrific drainage of it's Kimmeridgien clay soil and a south/southeast exposure that provides optimum sunlight throughout the growing season.

Vinification: The winemaking techniques strive to honor the high quality of the terroir, vines and grapes, bringing out the very best in every harvest. A small percentage of the final blend does see a short time in oak barrels.

Enough wood to warrant mentioning is present on the ripe white orchard fruit aromas that also exhibit hints of the exotic and tidal pool. The rich, caressing and seductively textured mid-palate of the medium weight flavors contrasts considerably with the very dry, ultra-crisp and slightly clipped finish comes up a bit short today though my sense is that this will harmonize once it passes a few years in bottle.

Matured in 35% barrel and the remainder in tank, including just 2% new oak, the 2016 Chablis 1Er Cru Vaillons comes from six different parcels that are vinified separately. It has a refined, floral bouquet with scents of nectarine and apricot blossom. I appreciate the purity of this wine. The palate is crisp and lightly spiced on the entry. There is good weight in the mouth with a touch of bitterness on the finish. I appreciate the "attack" of this Vaillons, a wine that is keen to make an impression.
