Domaine Christian Moreau Pere & Fils Chablis Grand Cru Les Clos 'Clos des Hospice' 2016

Terroir: The Domaine Christian Moreau Père et Fils Grand Cru Les Clos ‘Clos des Hospice’ is produced from the domaine’s tiny one-acre monopole at the foot of the Les Clos vineyard. The vineyard was acquired by the Moreau family in 1904 and has a slightly different terroir to rest of the vineyard, with slightly heavier marl soils, old and densely planted vines.

Vinification The grapes are pruned heavily during the growing season to keep yields to a minimum. Grapes are hand harvested using small containers, and brought to the winery for further sorting. Like all Moreau wines, the selection process is strict for this cuvée with only the highest quality grapes making their way to the fermentation. The must is fermented in stainless steel followed by 12 months of aging in the cellars. A small portion on the final blend is aged in oak cask.

A ripe version, revealing orange, grapefruit, peach and mineral aromas and flavors. The vibrant structure keeps this focused through the long, clean finish. Drink now through 2023.

A small portion of the Les Clos vineyard once belonged to the charitable Hospices de Chablis. Today, this one acre is vinified apart from this producers other Le Clos cuve. This is a rich wine, hinting at wood aging with intense fruit and acidity. It has a rich texture, a great balance between acidity and the ripe white and citrus fruits. Drink this wine from 2022.

One more time moderate wood frames the super fresh, cool and admirably pure aromas of citrus, floral, sea breeze and mineral reduction scents. Just like the straight version of Les Clos, I very much like the lovely texture of the energetic medium weight plus flavors that also possess fine concentration if a hair less refinement on the sappy, long and driving finish. Like its stablemate, this is a very impressive effort in the context of what is typical for the vintage.

The 2016 Chablis Grand Cru les Clos des Hospices, the one hectare bought from the Hospices in 1904, has a vivacious and charming bouquet with dried pineapple, nectarine, cold wet stone and a subtle sea spray aroma that is more evident here than on the regular les Clos. The palate is very well balanced with crisp acidity. This is lively and tensile with that marine influence coming to play toward the crisp and focused finish. It is a sophisticated Chablis that should give a couple of decades of drinking pleasure.
