Fattoria dei Barbi Vigna del Fiore Brunello di Montalcino DOCG 2012
Fattoria dei Barbi’s single-vineyard Brunello bottling, Vigna del Fiore, was first produced in 1981 for the celebration of the 50th birthday of Francesca Cinelli Colombini, a pioneer and innovator of the family business.
Terroir: This 14-acre (5.7-hectare) vineyard has been cultivated since the 16th Century. It is one of the most Eastern and oldest vineyard sites in the Brunello zone (planted in 1939). The particular exposition and composition of the soil results in a Brunello with a very elegant bouquet, balance, and added complexity.
Vinification: Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction results in an increased color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium size oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.
Additional Details edit
Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age.

Earthy aromas of truffle, leather, dried herb and dark berry slowly take shape in this full-bodied red. Smooth and concentrated, the palate doles out fleshy wild cherry, raspberry compote, and savory orange zest and star anise notes, framed by fine-grained tannins. Drink 20192025.

The 2012 Brunello di Montalcino Vigna del Fiore is a special single-vineyard expression that really delivers the goods. Only 3,900 bottles are made, whereas production numbers for the Brunello annata top 200,000. Both are priced the same. If you can get your hands on this wine, I recommend it. The bouquet is pure and tight with bright fruit aromas that still show some wiggle room for further complexity and evolution. Candied cherry, creme de cassis and fresh violets appear on first nose. More robust tones of pipe tar and tobacco give the wine a greater sense of importance. This wine exceeded my expectations. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2027.

Dark red with a large amber rim. Forward aromas and flavors of spicy red fruit, camphor and black tea leaf. The musky finish is bright and juicy though I find this to be at once strangely open and shut down. Currently, the classico Brunello from Barbi is much more precise and enjoyable, but maybe its just me not reading this wine right.

Exhibiting a fine blend of fruity and savory characteristics, this red evokes wild strawberry, cherry, juniper, leather and iron aromas and flavors. There is energy and a sweetness midpalate. The finish extends with refined tannins and freshness. Best from 2020 through 2034.

A powerful and complex nose of dried strawberry, balsamic and leather, the palate has strawberry fruit, wild mushroom and sweet spices, complete and complex.
