Trapiche Malbec 2003

95 Points

“Even better than the three single vineyard offerings is the 2003 Malbec Tributo Felipe Villafane. The wine was sourced from a vineyard planted in 1948. Purple-colored, it has an expressive nose of pain grille, scorched earth, licorice, black cherry, and blackberry liqueur. The wine has exceptional depth, layers of spicy black fruit flavors, and enough stuffing to evolve for 8-10 years. This intense effort has a 60+ second finish. It should effortlessly make old bones, providing pleasure through 2035 at the least. Congratulations to Trapiche for some fantastic Malbecs at friendly prices. If I were a young collector, I’d be stashing these away in my cellar. Trapiche is best known for its value-priced wines, a number of which are listed at the end of this report in the Best Buy charts. However, the mid-range and upper end of the Trapiche portfolio offer some super wines that should not be missed.”
