Château Mont-Redon

About

Château Mont-Redon

Henri Plantin (1890 – 1966) acted as a precursor. In 1923, well before the creation of the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée Châteauneuf-du-Pape in 1936, he acquired this property isolated from the village and surrounded by woods. A visionary, he worked to group the plots around the estate and sensed the exceptional character of the terroir of the plateau which dominates Mont-Redon then covered with scrubland and groves. A pioneer, he decided to clear this unexploited land and plant vines in the rolled pebbles. The following generations helped, little by little, to expand the estate to 100 hectares of vines in one piece, earning it the pride of being the largest estate in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation. In 1980, the farm expanded with the acquisition of a 15-hectare vineyard in the Côtes-du-Rhône Appellation, then another of 35 hectares in the Lirac Appellation in 1997. Adjacent, they are both located on the commune of Roquemaure.

History

Mont-Redon has been the location of our vineyard since Antiquity. The topography of the “round mountain” located at the foot of the estate inspired the Romans who called it “Montem Rotundum”, translated today as Mont Redon. In the year 1344, the vineyard belonged to the Pontifical Domain. The Mont-Redon terroir was then cultivated by the papal court for the production of its wines. In the 18th century, this land became the property of the Astier-Mathieu family, whose Anselme Mathieu, famous Provençal Félibre, who called himself Marquis de Mont-Redon, exploited the estate until the end of the 19th century. After the phylloxera crisis, when everything had to be rebuilt and recreated, Henri Plantin decided in 1923 to buy the estate which then only comprised 2.5ha of vines. Château Mont-Redon, owned by the Plantin family, Heirs Abeille-Fabre, is currently managed by the 4th generation.

Farming Practices

Agriculture

At Château Mont-Redon are in charge of a several million years old terroir, where the vines planted by our ancestors allow us to produce great wines today. With these values of transmission, we know that we are planting today the vines for tomorrow’s generations. Our farming practices are oriented towards a long-term vision of preserving our environment: resting the land between two plantings with melliferous plant cover, return to full tillage, highlighting the value of manual work, recycling our wastewater on reed bed, planting of traditional plant species of the Provencal landscape. In 2018, Château Mont-Redon obtained the High Environmental Value level 3 certification.

The Winemaker

Pierre Fabre

Today, Château Mont-Redon is owned by the Plantin family, heirs Abeille-Fabre, and is currently run by the 4th generation, including winemaker Pierre Fabre. Driven by the passion for wine, this generation has inherited the entrepreneurial spirit of their ancestors and created new wines, like the single estate cuvée «Le Plateau de Mont-Redon» and looked for other great terroirs of the region.
