This wine is made exclusively from the famed Bockstein vineyard which is a VDP Grosse Lage®. VDP. Grosse Lage® is the designation for the very best German vineyards (equivalent of the Burgundian “Grand Cru”). The sites are precisely demarcated vineyard parcels. It is here that the best wines ripen, wines that express a unique vineyard origin and possess exceptional ageing potential.
Terroir: The Bockstein vineyard is located in a side valley of Saar and forms a natural south to southwest facing amphitheatre above the village of Ockfen. Dr. Fischer owns 2.5 hectares.
The terroir in this vineyard is ideal: Steep slope, 40 years old vines, roots going 15 feet deep, south-southwest exposure.
The soil is comprised predominantly of hard, weathered, gravelly grey slate.
Vinification: Kabinett is the first late-harvest predicate. Ripe, healthy grapes ripen and are selected and harvested by hand. The must sugar weight must be at least 75° Oechsle (18.2 Brix). The wine is aged for about 6 months on the lees in stainless steel vats.
Wines that grow in the Ockfener Bockstein exhibit floral components reminiscent of elderflower, lilac, and violets as well as a salty-smoky mineral character.
