Kolbenhof Gewurztraminer Alto Adige DOC 2017

This is a single vineyard wine sourced from Hofstatter’s Barthenau estate. Hofstatter was the first producer in the Alto-Adige to produce single vineyard wines at the equivalent of the grand cru level.

Terroir: The Gewürztraminer grape variety has a long tradition in Tramin and its demands are fulfilled in the steep site at Kolbenhof in Söll. It enjoys the morning sun on the west side of the Adige River and brisk mountain fall winds provide sufficient coolness in the evening.

The Jesuit monks of Innsbruck recognized the virtues of this vineyard and produced wine from it in the 18th century. The combination of the particular microclimate, the southeastern orientation of the vineyard and the age of the vines make our Kolbenhof estate one of South Tyrol’s great grand crus for Gewürztraminer. The vine itself is named after its origin, the wine village of Tramin.

Vinification: On delivery to the winery the grapes are lightly crushed and the juice is left in contact with the skins for a few hours to enhance the wine’s typical fruit flavour. The berries are then gently pressed, the juice is clarified using natural sedimentation and fermented at a controlled temperature. After fermentation the Kolbenhof Gewürztraminer is matured together with the fine lees for eight months, during which period the lees are stirred up once a week (battonage). The wine is aged an additional 4 months prior to release.

Additional Information

The Kolbenhof Gewürztraminer is characterised by sumptuous fruit. Deep golden yellow in colour with green reflexes, on the nose it is reminiscent of ripe apricot and peach intermingled with exotic fruits such as lychee, mango and passion fruit. The fruit characteristics follow through on the palate; full-bodied, luscious but dry, the opulence cut by vibrant, firm acidity finishing elegant, dry and aromatic.

"The 2017 J. Hofstatter Gewürztraminer Vigna Kolbenhof is spicy and perfumed, showing a refined expression of the variety. Ripe peach, kiwi and young mango gives way to lifted yellow flowers and a whiff of minty herbs. It’s silky, showing medium weight, with a sizzle of brisk acids and minerals to balance its ripe fruit profile. Never overindulgent or tiring; instead, the Vigna Kolbenhof showcases remarkable balance and poise. Notes of kiwi, apricot and a hint of vanilla bean linger on the long and refreshing finish. It’s amazing to think that this is from a warm vintage as well."
