Le Chiuse

About

Le Chiuse

Le Chiuse played a key role in the vineyard holdings of the legendary Biondi-Santi family since the late 18th century. Handed down, generation-to-generation the current owner, Simonetta Valiani is the great granddaughter of Ferruccio Biondi-Santi. Simonetta inherited the estate and decided to start producing wine under the Le Chiuse name in 1993 with the help of her husband, Nicolò Magnelli and their son, Lorenzo. Until then, the vineyards were rented to her uncle, Franco Biondi-Santi, which were at the time used for Biondi-Santi’s Riserva bottling. The vineyards are planted with a form of Massal selection in order to maintain the genetic heritage of the estate. Budwood from 60-70 year old vines of the BS 11 Sangiovese clone, personally selected by Tancredi Biondi-Santi for these vineyards, is grafted onto American rootstock. To maintain the highest quality, yields are carefully controlled. The yields here are half that demanded by consorzio rules. The winery’s gravity-fed cellars are state-of-the-art.

History

Located in North of Montalcino, the Le Chiuse estate lies on the north-east hillside of Montosoli, at about 300 meters elevation with all-day sun exposure and includes a total of 7ha of vineyards all planted to Sangiovese Grosso with low yields of 50 quintals per ha. Because of his special position Le Chiuse played a key role in the vineyard holdings of the Biondi-Santi family since the late 18th Century when they used these vineyards for their Riserva bottling. Handed down, generation to generation, to the current owner, Simonetta Valiani is the grand-daughter of Tancredi Biondi-Santi. Simonetta regained full ownership of the property (which she rented to her brother, Franco Biondi-Santi) in the 1990s when she decided to produce her own wine under the label “Brunello Le Chiuse” with her husband, Nicolò Magnelli and their son, Lorenzo. Together, the family restored the farm house buildings, the chapel, built a new underground-cellar and planted new vineyards. From such an important history the style of the wines is very traditional respecting the origins and reflecting this important terroir.

Owner & Winemaker

Lorenzo Magnelli

Lorenzo Magnelli was born in Florence on March 27, 1984 and was brought
into the family business at an early age. When he was only five, Lorenzo
started getting hands on experience in the winery, shadowing his father,
Nicolo Magnelli, in the vineyards and winery.
All those rides on the tractor in the vineyard as a child inspired Lorenzo to
study at the Technical Agricultural Institute, where he graduated in 2002.
Following his studies, Lorenzo travelled abroad to gain experience and was
the cellar master in the 2005 harvest at the Rubicon Estate in Napa Valley,
California.
Since 2006, Lorenzo has pursued his passion for wine at the family’s Montalcino estate, managing all the
work in the vineyard and winery. He oversees 17.5 acres of vineyards located on the northeast hillside of
Montosoli, which have 15 acres designated as Brunello di Montalcino and 2.5 acres designated as Rosso di
Montalcino. As a custodian of the vineyards, Lorenzo watches over the Massal selection of vines that
preserves the vine selection made for this vineyard by Tancredi Biondi-Santi, the grandfather of current
owner Simonetta Valiani.
