About

Maschio

The roots of Cantine Maschio’s passion for wine, are as old as the vines on the Veneto’s hills. The wines produced by Cantine Maschio come from grapes sustainably grown on the hills of Valdobbiadene and Conegliano and in the Piave Valley, which are the most prestigious areas in the appellation and speaks on the heart of traditional Prosecco. Today, Maschio is one of the top five Prosecco brands in Italy. Maschio focuses on high-quality production. The grapes go through a gentle pressing process. Only the must from the first pressing, the “mosto fiore” or free-run juice, is used to make the base wine. To create a wine with the richest aromas, mosto is put to the side and carefully stored to later be used in the cuvee for the secondary fermentation. A steward of the region, Maschio is dedicated to sustainable practices in the vineyards and winery. To this end, Maschio has the EMAS and DNV certifications for sustainable wine production. Winemaking is a water-intensive process, and Maschio has made mindful water consumption a priority, saving 2,641,721 gallons of water through internal water recycling systems in 2021 alone.

History

The story of Maschio springs to life when the founder, Bonventura Maschio, converted a distillery into a state-of-the-art winery in 1973. Since then, Maschio has brought the traditional sparkling wines of Prosecco to wine lovers around the globe.

Winemaker

Gabriele Cescon

Gabriele Cescon was born in Fontanelle, a small town just 3 miles from the Maschio winery. He grew up in a winemaking family, which inspired him to study enology at the prestigious G.B. Cerletti Enological School of Conegliano.

Once he finished his studies, he immediately began his work and training in local companies, thus gaining important experience in everything related to “cellar life”, from the technical-bureaucratic aspects to the transformation of grapes into must and wine. In 1988 he joined the team at Cantine Maschio and as he says, “a dream came true there, since it is a company that produces sparkling wines, the highest aspiration of every enologist”.

At Maschio Gabriele made is way up the ranks and achieved the position of Director and Winemaker of Cantine Maschio in 2008. In addition, his passion for sparkling wine drove him to become part of the Board of Directors at the Consorzio del Prosecco DOC and to become a member of the Technical Commission of the Conegliano Valdobbiadene Prosecco DOCG Consortium. He never misses an opportunity to carry out experiments, to try innovations and to develop new products from the grapes of the territory in which he was born and raised.
