The Leflaive family has resided in the village of Puligny Montrachet for centuries and it is now home to Maison Olivier Leflaive. With it’s variety of 1er Crus and a shared portion of Grand Crus Le Montrachet, Bienvenue-Bâtard Montrachet and Bâtard Montrachet, the terroir of Puligny is second to none. Each year Leflaive produces close to a dozen unique cuvées from these world class Chardonnay vineyards.
Terroir: 1er Cru Champs Gains is a total of 26 acres of prime Chardonnay terroir located as it’s name suggests at the top of the hillside where the fields meet the forest. It is located north of the Grand Crus above the village of Puligny and directly adjacent to 1er Cru Folatières and Sous la Garenne. Soils are a blend of clay chalky limestone.
Vinification: Leflaive has been producing this cuvèe for over 10 years from a single plot in the heart of the vineyard. The wine undergoes primary and secondary fermentation in barrel and is aged for a total of 12 months in on its lees in 25% new oak. Following a gentle fining the wine is bottled and rests in the cellar for a short period prior to release.
A classic of the domain, Puligny Montrachet Champ Gains has a spicy nose, with notes of white peach and buttered toast, mirrored on the palate as well. On the palate, the wine has a great substance with fine minerality and a good length.
