About

A Sicilian “Bordeaux”, as the rough diamond Cabernet Sauvignon meets the estate’s Nero d’Avola, “as native as you can get”, that speaks pure Sicilian dialect. The result is “a marriage of complexity and clarity”: a fusion of French strength and gentle Sicilian tenacity.

Terroir

100% estate-grown fruit is sourced from Nero d’Avola and Cabernet Sauvignon plots situated between 1,000 and 1,300 feet above sea level on rich, clay soils. Guyot-trained vines have limited yields of 28 quintals per acre.

Vinification

The grapes are harvested in mid-September. Each parcel is harvested and vinified separately in small, stainless steel vats with long macerations, over two weeks for the Cabernet Sauvignon and one week for the Nero d’Avola. At the end of fermentation, the wines are transferred to French oak barriques (50% new and 50% second and third passage) where they are left to mature for 18 months before being blended and bottled. The resulting wine rests in bottle for six months before release.

A 50-50 blend of Cabernet Sauvignon and Nero d'Avola, the 2019 Sicilia Hugonis (packaged in a heavy glass bottle) is dark, sweet, rich and nicely concentrated. The bouquet offers opulent fruit tones with blackberry preserves and dark cherry confit. There is plenty of dark spice, cinnamon and sweet tobacco thanks to the use of both barrique (for the French grape) and botte (for the Sicilian variety). The tannins are soft, and there is a moment of thinness on the mid-palate, but the wine does not lack for structure. You could pair it with Sicilian veal involtini stuffed with bread crumbs, garlic and Pecorino cheese. Production is 6,000 bottles.

Tenuta Rapitalà has recently revisited some of its label designs and has added a few certified organic wines to the portfolio. In fact, this estate has been making organic wines for a number of years already. The entire estate covers 260 hectares of land in Camporeale (in Palermo province) with 180 hectares of vines, ranging from 300 to 600 meters in elevation. The lower areas see clay soils, and the higher vineyards are characterized by sandy soils.
