Re Manfredi

About

Re Manfredi

Re Manfredi was established in 1998 in the heart of the Aglianico del Vulture DOC production area, just a few kilometres from Venosa. The plateau is dominated by the extinct volcano Vulture, whose lava, mixed with soil rich in clay, calcium, nitrogen and tuff, has given rise to an extremely suitable terroir in which complex and unique wines are born, characterised by a particular minerality and sapidity. The property covers 100 hectares of vineyards cultivated with native and allochthonous grapes, using the Guyot and spurred cordon systems. In the centre stands an elegant and cosy masseria and next to it is the winery with a modern vinification plant and a prestigious barrique cellar where the wines are refined.

History

The Re Manfredi estate has been managed by the Montrone Family since it was founded in 1998. The 271-acre estate is run with an unswerving focus on quality. It is perfectly situated on the slopes of Monte Vulture, an ancient extinct volcano, which rises tall over the Apennines mountain range. Here, plentiful sunshine, parched, hilly vineyards at fairly high elevation, and volcanic soils found on Monte Vulture all combine to form ideal growing conditions in the Aglianico del Vulture DOC. The estate vineyards are located in an entire plot at the lower elevations of the volcano’s base and a unique single vineyard of 50 acres is located on the steep slopes of the Vulture Volcano. 80% of the land is dedicated to the indigenous Aglianico, with smaller amounts of the white Müller Thurgau and Traminer. This benchmark Aglianico producer has earned numerous Tre Biccheri awards, one of Italy’s most respected wine honors.

Sean McCrum

Morgan Sean McCrum grew up in Napa, California, surrounded by expanses of vineyards and famous wineries interspersed with ancient oak trees on the rolling hills of the Napa Valley. After attending UC Davis and earning a degree in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology in 2008, he started working and immediately found a passion for the close relationship between nature, science and creativity in winemaking, eventually pursuing a career as an oenologist. He worked for several American wineries where he perfected quality viticultural and winemaking techniques capable of fully expressing the uniqueness of a vineyard and cellar. Around the same time, he returned to further his knowledge at UC Davis, earning a postgraduate degree in viticulture and oenology. Over the years Morgan often visited Basilicata, his wife’s homeland and developed a passion for Aglianico del Vulture. He finally moved to the Vulture area, joining Gruppo Italiano Vini and taking over as oenologist at the Re Manfredi winery in Basilicata.
