Famille Hugel

About

Famille Hugel

For over 370 years and with 13-family generations the Hugel family has unrivaled experience and knowledge of Alsace vineyards and winemaking. Known today for their passion and modern outlook, the dynamic Hugel family, located in the picture-postcard fortified village of Riquewihr, has earned a worldwide reputation for their Alsace wines. Emblematic of the Hugel’s abilities to combine tradition and innovation, the family has recently introduced new wines and bold, more inclusive labeling to call greater attention to Hugel’s entire family and their unique vineyard holdings

Farming Practices

Agriculture

The family owns a 30 hectares estate of prime sites in Riquewihr, mostly classed Grand Cru, and buys grapes from a further 110 hectares farmed under contract. The Hugel estates are planted with only the noble Alsace grape varieties, with vines averaging 35 years of age.

13th Generation

Jean-Frédéric Hugel

Jean-Frédéric Hugel was born in 1989. He studied marketing and business in Strasbourg at L’ISEG (business school). He joined the family estate on a full time basis in 2010. He spends half of his time in France and the other half travelling around the world as an Ambassador for Famille Hugel, visiting export markets such as England and the USA. While in France, he takes part in the everyday business—conducting tastings at the winery and participating in the harvest.

The Winemaker

Marc Andre Hugel

Marc Andre Hugel is part of the 13th generation of the Hugel family. He is following in his father’s footsteps as the head winemaker for the family.
