About

Hewitson

We are situated in the heart of the Barossa Valley on the historic Seppeltsfield Road and boasts some of the oldest vines in the world. Our fruit is sourced from dry-grown, pre-Phylloxera vineyards of the Barossa Valley and also single-site vineyards in Eden Valley and the Adelaide Hills. The oldest Mourvèdre vines on Earth are not in Europe. The Old Garden Mourvèdre Vineyard was planted by Friedrich Koch in 1853 and is renowned as the oldest of this grape variety in the world. At over 165 years old, (older than Adelaide’s oldest building), just eight rows of these dry grown pre-phylloxera tri-centenarian, Barossa Ancestor vines still flourish on their original roots today. The much-lauded single vineyard wine produced from this fruit is our Old Garden Mourvèdre.

Farming Practices

Agriculture

THE HEWITSON WINERY runs entirely with
solar energy, placing it in an elite group of
wineries globally.
Recycling of water is an ongoing practice.
Harvested rainwater used for cleaning passes
through our water recycling plant then is put out
on the vineyards and fields. These practices benefit the native grasses and trees, leading to increased natural absorption of
carbon into the ground, eliminating erosion and
cooling our vineyards, thus significantly
improving the quality of our wine.
Hewitson has re-planted riparian areas of the
vineyards with native trees, adding to the
progressively organic and bio-dynamic practices
used in their vineyards and winery.

Owner & Winemaker

Dean Hewitson

Dean Hewitson was born in 1965 in the primary
days of the red and white table wine booms in
Australia. Consequently, in the early ‘70s he was
planting vines and harvesting grapes in the small
vineyard his parents with friends commenced,
while collecting wine labels in a scrap book. It was
an inconspicuous beginning to a life in wine.
Dean completed his Wine Making Degree at Australia’s Roseworthy College in 1986. He then spent the next decade gaining invaluable experience in Australia, France and USA. These included vintages in Oregon, Bordeaux, Champagne, Beaujolais and Provence, as well as completing his Masters (Enology) at UCDavis, California. Dean returned to Australia and established his eponymous winery Hewitson in 1998 in the heart of the Barossa Valley.
