About

Domaine Armand Rousseau

Domaine Armand Rousseau’s approach lies in the unconditional love for Burgundy’s terroirs. From this passion, the work well done is born, applied to every gesture, action, and stage of the Domaine’s winemaking process. With this vision, enriched by the experience of four generations, the Rousseau family has come to understand each terroir, each plot, and each vine in the smallest detail. In Burgundy, the Climats designate each vineyard plot. Identified and demarcated by monks over a thousand years ago, each Climat is unique due to the disparity in exposure, the variations in slopes, the different compositions of the limestone soils, and the climatic conditions of the vintage. The estate’s mission is to faithfully capture the aromatic palette of the wines: the soul of each Climat.

History

The Rousseau family has been cultivating the vineyards in Burgundy for four generations, sharing the same passion and cultivating the finest terroirs of the Côte de Nuits. Eric runs the estate with the help of his daughter, Cyrielle. Over the years, the estate has grown and now cultivates an area of 15.33 hectares, including 3 hectares of Village Appellation, 3.77 hectares of Premier Cru Appellation, and 8.51 hectares of Grand Cru Appellation, located in the Gevrey-Chambertin and Morey-Saint-Denis regions.

Farming Practices

Agriculture

Each Pinot Noir grape contains its own unique elements. It embodies the identity of its terroir. Each grape is observed, nurtured, and cherished to ensure it reaches optimal phenolic and organoleptic maturity. While simple Guyot pruning is practiced throughout the vineyard, located on hillsides with east or southeast exposure on clay-limestone soils, the vines are cultivated traditionally, with yields of 30 to 40 hectoliters per hectare.

3rd Generation

Eric Rousseau

In 1982, Eric Rousseau joined the team after completing secondary education at the Lycée Agricole et Viticole de Mâcon Davayé and a year of specializing in oenology at the University of Dijon. He also expanded his skills by working for wine merchants in Burgundy. Eric began his career in the vineyards. He applied new techniques such as green harvesting, leaf thinning, and mechanical tillage without the use of insecticides or chemical supplements. He moved the estate toward more organic viticulture and became increasingly involved in winemaking. He maintained a traditional vinification process with minimal wine manipulation.

4th Generation

Cyrielle Rousseau

In 2014, Cyrielle Rousseau returned permanently to the estate to work alongside her father Eric. After earning a DEUG (Degree in Geology), a Bachelor’s degree in Viticulture, and the DTO (Department of Wine Trades) in Dijon, she went abroad to gain experience, participating in harvests and winemaking in Oregon, Australia, and New Zealand, while also learning about the business side of things with wine merchants and importers.

She now manages the estate with her father, who kindly passes on his knowledge so she can one day pursue the estate’s philosophy on her own while maintaining the values so dear to the family.
