About

The Fiore is the most Southern vineyard in the Fattoria dei Barbi estate, in the Southern area of Montalcino’s district. It is a narrow valley with shale soil, here the grapes for the future Brunello Vigna del Fiore ripen perfectly, protected from cold winds and hot Sirocco. The result is a sumptuous Brunello, elegant and complex.

Terroir

This 14-acre (5.7-hectare) vineyard has been cultivated since the 16th Century. It is one of the most Eastern and oldest vineyard sites in the Brunello zone (planted in 1939). The particular exposition and composition of the soil results in a Brunello with a very elegant bouquet, balance, and added complexity.

Vinification

Following harvest, the fruit undergoes a pre-fermentation cold maceration (“cold-soak”), which consists of cooling the grapes at a temperature of 3°-5°C (37 – 41°F) in an anaerobic environment (under a CO2 blanket) to protect the fruit from oxidation. This non-alcoholic, aqueous extraction increases color intensity and stability, softer astringency and tannins, and more body and aromatics. After 48 hours, the temperature is raised and alcoholic fermentation begins, lasting 16 -17 days and temperatures reach 29°- 30°C (81 – 86°F). After racking and malolactic fermentation, the wine is aged in small-medium oak barrels (500L – 20HL) for the first months, followed by two years in 30HL Slavonian oak casks. The wine rests in bottle for four months before release.

Tasting Notes

Deep ruby red color with garnet notes on the rim. Complex aromas of cherry, blackcurrant, plum, almond and vanilla with hints of balsamic. The aromas repeat on the palate which is smooth and balanced with added spice and a long, persistent finish. This wine is generally ready to drink soon after release and has an excellent capacity to age

Food Pairing

Perfect for important dishes, roasted or grilled red meats, game, venison, stewed wild boar. Excellent with mature cheeses.

This red is beefy and closed, with the dense, powerful structure putting the brakes on cherry, kirsch, plum and white pepper flavors for now. Yet there is plenty in reserve as this plays out on the lingering finish. If anything upsets the balance, this is a tad dry on the finish today, but give this the benefit of the doubt. Best from 2026 through 2045. 333 cases made, 63 cases imported.

The nose features adventurous aromas of wood and stone after a storm, along with warmer notes of dark chocolate and dried cherries. The chocolate and cherries headline the palate, but bitter undertones of coffee and licorice provide balance. Acid shines through dense, chewy tannins

An full-bodied yet elegant and balanced Brunello with succulent layers of chocolate, orange zest, toffee, sour cherries and cedar. Firm and finely structured. Try from 2024.
