About

The Marchesi di Barolo estate encompasses approximately 430 acres of vineyards in the Langhe, some of the finest in Piedmont, including the prestigious Cannubi cru. The cellars are located in the village of Barolo, overlooking the Renaissance castle of the Marchesi Falletti di Barolo. Barolo as we know it today was first made in the early 19th century by the Marchese Carlo Tancredi Falletti di Barolo and his wife, Giulia.

Terroir

The Barolo del Comune di Barolo derives from the processing of grapes coming from the best crus of the Municipality of Barolo. Grapes harvested in Cannubi, Sarmassa, Coste di Rose, Vignane, Preda, Boschetti and Ravera contribute to the production of the wine. These vineyards are characterized by soils rich in clay (Marne di Sant’Agata) and different percentages of sand, silt and limestone.

Vinification

The grapes from the individual vineyards are rigorously harvested by hand and a selection of the best bunches is made already in the vineyard. Each cru is vinified separately: the destemmed and pressed grapes ferment at a controlled temperature in stainless steel fermenters. The maceration on the skins lasts approximately 15 days during which the operations of pumping the must over the pomace cap favor maximum extraction of the polyphenolic substances contained within the peel.

Tasting Notes

The color is ruby red with a tendency towards garnet. The aroma is intense and persistent with a clear hint of red fruits in alcohol, cinnamon, absinthe and tobacco. The taste is full and elegant, with soft and enveloping tannins; the spicy notes and the woody blend perfectly giving a finish of great finesse.

Food Pairing

It is the ideal companion for egg pasta, tajarin and ravioli with sauces such as game ragout and truffles. For meats, it goes well with red meats, roasted or braised, game and venison. Lastly, it pairs magnificently with sheep's and goat's cheeses or mature hard cheeses.

A complex red, showing pure cherry and plum fruit flavors, along with accents of earth, tobacco, eucalyptus and mineral. Supple, yet with moderate density to the dusty tannins that provide support. Fine balance and length. Best from 2025 through 2042.

Dried raspberries, cherries, tobacco leaves, porcini and rose hips on the nose. It’s medium-bodied with firm, very fine tannins. Well framed with a weightless feel. Delicate, with pretty red-berry and floral notes. Better from 2024.

The 2018 Barolo del Commune di Barolo is one of the best recent editions of this wine I can remember tasting. A burst of spice, cedar and orange peel melds into ripe red cherry and raspberry fruit. Aromatic and silky on the palate, with good depth, the 2018 is a fine choice for drinking over the next handful of years.
