Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes 2007

Domaine Jacques Prieur

Terroir: Domaine Jacques Prieur's 3.7 acre plot of Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru Les Combettes sits with an ideal southeast facing exposure. The soil is primarily of clay and limestone with average draining that leads to highly ripe grapes.

Vinification: Grapes are hand harvested, strictly sorted and destemmed. The must will sit on the skins for 12-14 hours prior to fermentation. The wine ages for a total of 16 months in oak barrels deep in the cellars of Domaine Jacques Prieur.

Additional Information

Has expressive, floral aromas of raisins, butter and caramel with notes of menthol. The complex fruit on the palate shows pralines, sweet spices, white pepper and firm minerality, and the wine's powerful, racy character in the mouth accentuates a very long finish.

Both intensely, brightly citric and at the same time overlain with lanolin and vanilla from barrel, the Prieur 2007 Puligny-Montrachet Les Combettes backs up this somewhat bifurcated initial impression with luscious peach and pineapple that mingle with chalk, salt, and smoke in a sustained finish. Typical for its vintage at this estate, this is flatteringly creamy in texture even as it is full of refreshment. It should be worth following for at least 5-7 years during which it will be interesting to taste for enhanced complexity.

Fresh peach, apples, spices and a hint of minerality on the nose. Pure and light on its feet, with apple and pear flavors complemented by minerals and white flowers. Sweetness is nicely balanced by ripe acidity. At once elegant and tactile wine, with good inner-mouth tension. The sugar fermentation started in September 2008, Nadine Gublin, with the malolactic fermentation taking place the following month.

A ripe, fresh, elegant, expressive and classy nose of green apple, pear and a hint of honeysuckle trimmed in a bit of wood toast leads to rich, full and impressively concentrated flavors that possess palate staining intensity on the opulent, powerful and explosive finish. This is a big but balanced effort.
