Brut Blanc de Blancs Vintage 1999

France » Champagne » Pol Roger » Brut Blanc de Blancs Vintage 1999

Summary

A favorite of many, the Brut Blanc de Blanc is one of the finest 100% Chardonnay Champagnes produced. This sparkling gem is only released in the finest of vintages.

Vinification This 100% Chardonnay is sourced exclusively from vineyards Grand Cru vineyards of Cramant, Les Mesnil, Oger, Avize and Oiry in the Cote des Blancs. The unblended wines are aged entirely in stainless steel to retain their focused, pure character, which is followed by 7 years of bottle aging in the Pol Roger cellars prior to release.

Vintage Notes

1999 was a warm year in Champagne with above average temperatures from early April through harvest. While some areas received heavy rain and in some instances hail, the majority of the Pol Roger vineyards were spared. Harvest occurred from September 19th through October 1st.

"A light, lively color with fine bubbles. The nose starts off exuberant and generous, revealing a wide range of complex aromas: marshmellow, violets, liquorice, brioche, toast and almonds. These notes develop a more powerful resonance of musk, leather and even iodine.

In the mouth, the bold attack develops into a balance of fullness and strength, giving way to notes dominated by fruitiness, underpinned by a "ground swell" of power that gives the wine it's structure." --Laurent D'Harcourt

"The Pol Roger 1999 Brut Blanc de Blancs. This offering was produced from 100% Chardonnay sourced in Grand Cru vineyards around Champagne. Each lot is aged separately in stainless steel followed by blending and bottling. It then ages in the Pol Roger cellars for 7 years prior to release. This Vintage Champagne has a suggested retail price of $130. This wine has a gorgeous straw color. The nose is welcoming with hints of smoke, brioche and flowers. Apple and orchard fruit in general emerge on the palate which is creamy and ethereal. Theyre joined by hazelnut and almond flavors as well as spice. The finish is amazingly layered and complex with minerals, spice, yeast and more. After swallowing a sip the flavors seem to continue forever. This wine is fresh and vibrant and really at the very beginning of its drinkable life cycle. There are champagnes in this price range that have bigger names, this selection from Pol Roger may not be quite as well known to the general consumer but it should be. Its got impressive flavors, depth and complexity to spare. In short a lot of wow factor going on here. Value in my opinion is relative to quality provided. In this case the 1999 Blanc de Blancs from Pol Roger is a relative steal at $130."

"An elegant, creamy style, offering coffee, vanilla, buttered pastry and spice aromas and flavors. The texture is offset by a firm, chalky feel, with the two dovetailing on the lingering finis. Drink now through 2020."

Pale gold with green highlights and very fine bubbles. Bracing aromas of pungent citrus peel underscored by nuances of honey and white flowers. Flavors of crisp apple and mineral qualities shine through in the very long finish. Understated power in a wine that will become even better with age.

Pol has been aggressive in its global reach over the past few years, not least in modernizing its facilities as of 2004. This older 1999 vintage shows the richness achievable in an all-chardonnay Champagne. It begins with light floral bouquet but really develops on the mid-palate, with plenty of vanilla and lemon flavors.

Scents of lilacs and chalk introduce this dramatic blanc de blancs, its subtle flavors of bitter melon and plate red fruit lasting through a finely balanced finish. For any fruits de mer.

Graphite, ginger, toast and coffee aromas and flavors indicate maturing character. Theres harmony, finesse and intensity, with a firm structure that should allow this to continue developing.

Much tighter than the regular 99. And drier. Very long. A great aperitif. This is the wine that in its time has been labeled both Chardonnay and Chardonnay Blanc de Blancs.

This is still extremely fresh for 10 year old Champagne with a bright and expressive nose of lemon-tinged floral notes that introduce crisp and moderately fruity flavors that possess good definition and solid complexity on the moderately long and dry finish. This is at a stage where it could certainly be drunk now with pleasure yet for those who enjoy distinct age, this could just as easily be cellared for another 5 to 7 years first."

White gold hue, very active stream of fine bubbles. Aromatic bouquet of toasted grains, light autolysis and malty fragrances. Foamy palate with a meld of peach and pear juice together with vanilla impressions. Pleasant note of sweetness resonates in the finish along with controlled acidity.

A remarkable wine that manages effortlessly to bring together ripe apricot and sweet pear flavors with a balanced maturity that is so delicious. It has power and richness, but there is also minerality and a hint of a chalky texture. This 1999 needs less aging than previous vintages and can be drunk now.

The 1999 Brut Blanc de Blancs Extra Cuvee de Reserve possesses notable thrust and energy on the palate. This vibrant, youthful Champagne flows with white peaches, mint and flowers all of which come together in a fascinating wine of notable pedigree. There is great depth, and the wine should continue to develop beautifully in bottle. This bottle was disgorged February 15th, 2007.
