El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Rioja Gran Reserva DOCa 2010

The El Coto de Rioja Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is produced only in years when the color, acidity and tannin levels combine to support the lengthy aging in process required by the Gran Reserva designation.

Terroir: The Coto de Imaz wines are made with grapes grown on El Coto’s Cenicero estate vineyards. These vineyards are home to low yielding, old Tempranillo vines in Rioja Alta. The clay and alluvial soils of this region are known for crafting wines with great longevity and good acidity.

Vinification: Coto de Imaz Gran Reserva is 100% Tempranillo sourced from estate vineyards in the Rioja Alta. The wine is slowly vinified in temperature controlled stainless steel tanks for a period of 20-30 days. The wine receives extended skin contact to encourage extraction, balanced tannins and structure, followed by 24 months of aging in American oak and 36 months in bottle prior to release.

Interest is stirred right away by tarry aromas of wild berry fruits and rooty spices. The solid palate is creamy while also showing its teeth. Toasty, spicy baked-berry flavors are integrated and finish long and dry, with a touch of latent oak. Drink at any point through 2032.

This impressive red from one of the most prolific producers in Spain offers exactly what youd expect of a gran reserva Rioja: a complex, layered nose and a palate brimming with dark red fruit, with fragrant notes of herbs, a bit of tobacco, and a hint of vanilla on the finish. It is beautifully structured, with enough tannins and bright acidity to balance the fruit, a pleasantly round mouthfeel, and a lively finish. The wine is aged in American oak for a full 24 months after being vinified in stainless steel, and rests for a further 36 months in the bottle before release.

This is a comfortable, round wine that's shaped by its oak tannins, with gentle red fruit cozying up to the oak spice. It feels full and sappy, the spice providing enough briskness to keep it structured. Ready to pour with roast eggplant stuffed with ground veal.
