Olivier Leflaive Frères Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Pucelles - Récolte du Domaine 2022

95 points
James Suckling

About

Puligny-Montrachet (pronounced Mont-Rachet) shares with Chassagne-Montrachet the most perfect expression of chardonnay. Just a few meters from the Grands Crus, the Appellation d’Origine Contrôlée established in 1937 offers a white wine with a strong personality and high reputation. The vines are mainly planted on limestone soil, sometimes deep or on hard rock.

Terroir

A single vine that has belonged to our Domaine since 1955. Which other plot can better explain the terroir of Puligny-Montrachet? The soil is light, rocky and little water-springs protect it during summer. It’s a very sophisticated wine.

Vinification

The grapes are grown sustainably in calcareous clay soil. 100% manual harvest. 100% Chardonnay. 100% whole grapes. 24h static settling. Alcoholic and malolactic fermentations in oak barrels. 18 months ( 6 months in stainless steel tank) 100% in oak barrels (25% new oak)

Tasting Notes

Wine of beautiful aromatic purity, sappy and complex. The powerful mouth gives it a unique dimension.

Food Pairing

Ideal with seared scallops and wild garlic parsley.

Sophisticated, fresh and lively, with focused citrus, mineral and almond flavors on a zesty, tangy texture and a rather full body. Fine-grained with great tension and a linear profile. So concentrated and so vivid in acidity, this needs several years to come into its own. Best from 2027.
